General information about Turkey

Turkey (tur. Türkiye), officially the Republic of Turkey (tur. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti), it is a state located in the south-western Asia (97%) and partly in the south-eastern Europe (3%). It was founded in 1923 after the division of the Ottoman Empire, the abolition of the monarchy and the proclamation of independence of the Republic of Turkey, whose president become Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
In the north-west Turkey borders with Bulgaria and Greece, in the east with Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and Iran, in the south-east with Iraq and Syria.
Turkey is bordered by four seas: the Black, Mediterranean, Marmara and the Aegean.
Its area (including inland waters) is 783 562.38 km².

The capital city of the Republic of Turkey is Ankara. Largest cities are Istanbul, Izmir, Bursa, Konya, Antalya, Adana.

Turkey’s population exceeds 76 million people, mostly Turks – 82%, Kurds – 10,6%. The rest of the Turkish population are Arabs, Greeks, Circassians, Armenians, Jews, and others. Also in Turkey permanently reside thousands of immigrants from Russia and other CIS countries, as well as from Europe.

The climate is subtropical mediterranean. It is characterized by a hot summer with air temperatures of 25°C to 40°C, and mild winters where the temperature is 10°C -20°C. Precipitation falls mainly in autumn and winter, rarely in the spring. The most comfortable months to visit Turkey is April – June and September – October.

The official language is Turkish. In the touristic centers are widespread English, German, Russian.

Form of government – semi-presidential system.

Head of state is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (former Prime Minister). On August 10, 2014 he won the country’s first direct presidential election, assumed the position on August 28, 2014. (Before him the President of Turkey was Abdullah Gul, from 28 August 2007 till August 28, 2014.).
